A Legacy of Success
Celebrating 55 Years: In 2024, all California State University EOPs marked 55 years of supporting student success. Cal Poly proudly stands as the first established EOP within the CSU system, founded in 1968 by Dr. Everett Chandler, then Dean of Students. Dr. Chandler's vision and commitment led to the creation of a pilot program for 22 students, even before state funding was available.
Early Beginnings: Dr. Chandler worked with California high schools to recruit motivated graduates for this new initiative. With the dedication of the first EOP Director, Dr. Richard Martinez, and Dr. David Sanchez, the program also laid the groundwork for Cal Poly’s Ethnic Studies department. Collaborative efforts with various campus departments helped support the first EOP students, who faced unique academic and personal challenges.
Program Growth: The EOP received state funding in 1969, expanding its reach and support. Initially serving 22 students, the program now assists over 600 eligible students each year, providing crucial personal and academic support to help them transition into university life and progress toward graduation.
EOP’s Impact: From its start, EOP has aimed to do more than just help students survive; it strives to foster academic excellence. Integrated into Student Academic Services, EOP collaborates across campus with programs like Summer Institute, Educational Talent Search, and Upward Bound, among others. These initiatives, born from the creativity and dedication of EOP staff, continue to make a significant impact on students' lives.
Continuing the Tradition: Today, EOP remains a vital part of Cal Poly, supporting first-generation and underrepresented students, and upholding the high standards of the university. Thanks to the program's strong foundation and ongoing commitment, EOP continues to be a cornerstone of student success at Cal Poly.
